The Move from Hell!!

So as many of you may have known my family and I moved this past sunday. We went from a 1.5 bedroom apartment (2nd bedroom is a 8x8 room very tiny like small office size) into a 3 bedroom apartment. Our old apartment was on the 2nd floor with access to an attic the entire length of the apartment.

After moving I realize I have become a hoarder.

When we moved into the apartment we just moved out of it took 2 trips renting a 17' uhaul truck (and the second trip was like 1/2 full). We had minimal storage in the first apartment and overtime in the second one we accumulated so much "stuff". We were offerred to move to the new apartment on July 14th so we literally had 3 weeks to pack an entire house and move it to the new place.

We still have the same landlords. The church owns 4 properties on it's land. We are now living in the biggest dwelling. Our apartment has 3 bedrooms, a dining room and a den where all the kids toys can go. My son goes from a 8x8 room to a 10x12; my 2 yr old daughter now gets her own room, we get our living room back (since the kids toys can go in the den) and we get our bedroom back (since our daughter now has her own room)

We moved literally 2 houses over. My wife suggested renting the truck and by God am I thankful we did. The new apartment is in walking distance to the old one so we could have just used handtrucks to move boxes and stuff over but moving on a sunday across the church parking lot we felt would be difficult (with all the cars attending service) so we went with the truck option.

We filled the 17' truck 5 times!!! 5 trips to load and unload everything from one house to the new one 200 feet away. We had everything moved in the 11 hours it took to load and unload everything from the 2nd floor of the old apartment to the main floor of the new one. We were suppose to get the keys to the new apartment a week before, this way we could put the stuff from the attic of the old place into the basement of the new place prior to moving day. Well that didn't happen. So on moving day everything got mixed together in the new place's Den. With the massive quantity of stuff we accumulated over the years (for the simple fact we had the room) we didn't have time to "stage" things. Main goal was to get everything to the new place as soon as possible.

So sunday night comes, our new apartment was a wreck with boxes everywhere, our bed broke in the process of the move so we slept on a mattress on the floor the first night. I put the kids beds together the night before we moved in so at least they slept comfortably. So monday comes and we still have a bedroom worth of stuff in the attic in the old place that needed to be moved over still. I go back to uhaul and rent a 9' van. Since everyone went back to work that day, I alone moved a bedroom worth of boxes from the 3rd floor attic of our old place to the basement of our new place. The van filled up 4 times and took me almost 6 hours working alone. At least this stuff didn't make it's way into the house, it went solely into the basement which can be accessed from the rear enterance. Monday ends.

Tuesday morning comes and we're finally ready to make some headway into the massive boxes in our apartment. I was suppose to return to work Wednesday, but the complete disarray of the house I tell my boss I need another day to which I am given time for. I work for the school district doing finance. I work 12 months a year (I'm not a teacher). So I get 10 vacation days which reset every July 1st. It's mid august and I used 6 for this move. Anyway back to my story... I rented a uhaul 9' van for the 3rd day in a row to pick up a washer and dryer to go in the basement. In the midst of the move we forgot to order one prior and couldn't wait 3 days for delivery so we ordered it that morning and picked it up in the afternoon from the store. On the way back I stopped at my job to pick up pallets since now we have basement storage I don't want my things to be ruined incase of a flood. So i head home, put 14 pallets down in the basement (after moving things around from the 4 van fulls of stuff I brought over the day before) and move the washer and dryer down to the basement and set up and install them. The hose leaks from the washer to the drain (washing machine hose is 6', which is just high enough to reach the top of the washer, I needed 3 extra feet to reach the drain pipe and the adapter I was using had a slow leak) Used plumbers tape and silicone to fix the seal thankfully it only took extra time.

Before i head back to uhaul to return the truck I stop off at sleepys mattress to buy a bed. They literally have nothing in stock. These stores are display purposes only, if you actually buy a product you have to drive 15 miles to the warehouse to pick it up. So 30 miles round trip at $1.19 a mile quickly adds up BUT paying $36 additional for a truck I was already renting was better than paying $75 for delivery the next day. By the time I picked up the bed from the warehouse, dropped it off home and returned the van it was 8pm. Too tired to do anything that night, the box the bed was in remained in the pile of boxes in our home while we slept on a mattress on the floor for the 3rd night in a row.

Wednesday morning comes and I'm finally free to organize the chaotic mess that is our apartment. Before I continue, I mentioned we have 2 small children. I don't want to make it appear I am doing everything, my wife is taking care of our children and trying to get their rooms in somewhat of an order. We picked up and moved and the kids need to adjust so she was working just as hard as I was even if it wasn't as much physical labor as I was doing. Back to the story... So we go to make the kids a bath in the morning and the hot water is brown. The previous tenant moved out on July 31st. It was August 10th so it was only 10 days. I've gone on vacations with my family and come home and the hot water isn't brown after not being used in 10 days. So either the previous tenant didn't use hot water, or used hot water knowing it was brown (gross). Plumber comes and says the hot water heater needs to be replaced but needs the landlords approval first. Needless to say a few phone calls later and the plumber came back to the house to replace it. Last night my wife went to cook dinner in our oven (which wasn't cleaned by the previous tenant at all) and there's no self cleaner either. I want to back pedal slightly, my wife spent most of moving day and the day after cleaning our old apartment and touching up spots with paint. We left our old apartment nearly immaculate and again why on sunday and monday none of the boxes in our new place were touched so literally tuesday was the first day we could do anything in there and I was out picking up a bed, pallets and a washer and dryer and moving it into the basement all day.

I spent a good 9 hours organizing the boxes into "stay up here" and "go down there" piles. Around 7pm the apartment was finally starting to sense some normalcy. Due to the increase in rent since this apartment is much bigger then our old one we made a few sacrifices to move in. Almost all of the offset in additional rent was negated by the fact that we don't have to do laundry at a laundromat anymore & that we would drop our cable down to only internet. During amazon prime day a few weeks ago I bought a firestick for each room and installed Kodi so between youtube streaming, pandora streaming and kodi streaming we're pretty much covered. Go to sit down after a long day (and long weekend) to have a beer and watch some tv and the internet goes out!!!

I swear I'm never moving again!!!!!!

    Wow...

I am easily confused by other people's, laziness and sloppiness and greed...

Any guess who might " now " be on my list, ( in 2017 )

I am a recovering hoarder myself and sometimes I think the recovery isn't going that well. I know you are exhausted and just want to restore order to your place but I encourage you to get rid of some of the stuff you have instead of just finding a place for it.

I suspect you will move again but try to remember this week and get rid of most of that junk before you do so. Hoarded junk accumulated to the available capacity. Set limits and stay within them. (I know, easier said than done.)

I hope you and your family enjoy your new place. It sounds like a good idea to be getting more space for your family.

    @DLich Good story.

2)see step #1 as moving sucks

@bgbelden I still managed to get in 337 stars lol. I couldn't turn down the 1 minute gas times the first 2 days. Took 5 minutes and especially during the evening hours being exhausted just sitting on the couch looking around at the clustef ruck of a mess It was easy to want to numb my mind and sight with some good old fashioned zombie killing.

The place is much more managable today. Everything that needs to be in the basement is in there now. Our den is cleaned and set up with childrens toys (the only room that is 100% finished) so the kids can play. Our living room is about 90% done. Dining room is completely usable except for a pile of boxes 5' wide by 3' deep by 5' high. But we can walk between rooms and use the microwave without any issues. Our daughters room is about 80% done as she slept in her own bed last night. There's a pile of boxes in and around her closet but a kid sleeping not in our bed to me is a success. My son has his TV and his chromecast, xbox and wii set up in his room. Side note... those electronics were hand me downs. Wii was mine from 2009 which I stopped playing when I was grandfathered an xbox 360 when my wife and I got married in 2011 (hers), and for christmas last year I got an XBox 1 so rather than get $65 from gamestop for the system and 20 games I decided to give that to my son also. He doesn't touch "daddy's xbox" though lol.

Our kitchen is still a disaster area though. My mother in law helped us unpack it on monday while my wife and I were in our old place finishing moving/cleaning it up. She put everything everywhere and there's no logic to how it was put in the cabinets. So we need to take everything out and start fresh. Don't let people set up your kitchen for you, because it won't ever be the way you want it to be. The dishes are in a cabinet behind the sink, cups are on the other side of the kitchen. It's like collecting crates in an exploration mission just to get a fork, plate and glass LOL.

Our hot water heater was replaced yesterday so kudos to clear hot water. Internet is working without any issues, slept in a bed without a 2 yr old in the middle, and we found our coffee pot so no more $2.20 7-11 coffee. All in all things are looking good. It's a complete 180 from the way it looked tuesday.

Regarding writing, I used to enter poetry contests when i was very young and in elementary school. Back in my "single carefree days" a couple of friends and I would partake in recreational use activities and write music and record on a 4 track. I'd post some lyrics but with this being the internet and all probably not a good idea with copyrights.

I did post the rough edit copy to myspace some 10 years ago when it was recorded. The original file has been long lost so it sounds rough but I invite anyone who wants to take a listen. It's the song "sometimes"

@DLich I've moved into my roommate's house over a year ago and while I may know where everything I own is, I still get confused in her tiny kitchen. I leave the Sweet & Low on the counter so I never have to search with a foggy head.

Need some tips to rent moving boxes also with moving trucks. Whether I should get those boxes from the moving company with I am moving or to get from any other company. Please share your views on it.

Try local supermarkets or schools. They typically have a bunch of empty boxes they can give you. Good luck
