New Player Question

So, if I spend the resources to train/upgrade my survivors/buildings, do I have to stay active in the game for the time to progress? Or can I exit the game, come back a couple hours later and continue the game with the time having happily ticked away? Would be sad if not, due to battery life issues and all.

No you can go have a life outside the game. The clock will keep ticking even if you log off.
