Why Upgrade? Also, when does game adjust to new level?

I wanted to ask a ? about why I should upgrade my players and equipment?  What advantages do I gain from upgrading everyone and everything?  We had a member come through our doors.  Player had level 22 survivors compared to my level 27 players and they were kicking my butt in Guild Wars.  They could play 6E missions and I could not even muster an attempt on 6D missions.  Therefore it shows it is not the level of survivors but of badging, weapons, and skill.

I appreciate your insight into this question.

Yes, it's not the level of the survivor that makes the difference in playing GW. It clearly is badges, weapons/armor, and skills.

But, the biggest advantage IMO for moving up your Player Level is the better camp you get (e.g., more from tents/storage, healing time, mission car, etc.) and the further you can get in The Distance. The resources you can get from the Hard Distance are pretty good and I would think someone with Level 22 Survivors would have trouble completing it even with max gear and great badges.

I think that what makes this game good is it can be played well no matter what level the player is. I'm a player that liked to keep upgrading my Survivors, Gear, and Camp. It makes me feel I have a goal I can stay focused on. I'd probably get pretty bored and quit if I never upgraded anything.

GW is a bit different, as the difficulty is adjusted to player level. So a mission on 6E will be lvl 39-41 if you are lvl 27, but your guildmate who is lvl 22 will play 6E at lvl 34-36. So assuming everything else being equal, you should have a similar level of relative difficulty and skill will be the main factor involved. Also Scavenge is adjusted to your level.

For other game modes, most notably the Challenge and Distance, however, difficulty does not scale in the same way and the higher your level, the easier those will get.

Guild wars as well as challenge missions are adjusted based on player level. A good player (eg at lvl 20) with the right survivor sets and equipment can possible surpass a higher level player without a good build. One may think a higher level player must be better but its not always so.

They are also adjusted for the level of the gear you have. So you have a lvl 23 character with level 30 gear your treated as if you were a level 30 character

It's average top 3 characters OR equipable gear level minus 3. Whichever is bigger.

People who has higher levels usually invested more time and/or money into the game and hence also has overall more knowledge and/pink stars, better equipment, badges etc. That's just a correlation though.

If I only upgrade two of my team to level 28, and equip them to fully upgraded weapons (to level 31), would my average still be counted as level 27?

No, it will be as 28.

If you want to be treated as 27 you can only upgrade two troops and no gear above 30

This is my understanding as it has always been in the past
( though the gear part is relatively new)

The gear is what got me. I had several pieces already reinforced so when I upgraded just 1 survivor to 28, my scavenge lvl went up 1. Thanks for cleqring  that up @ambience and @ATLAS-Z!

Scavenge diff works a little differently, but I'll refrain from complicating it further since it's not really consequential

My main concern is Challenge and GWs - if my scavenge level is not going to update starting levels I'm all good.
Otherwise, I'm worried that I'm now seeing lvl 33 hard scavenge even though I've only updated 1 hero to 28. The rest of my peeps are at lvl 27, and I haven't yet upgraded my workshop - so top gear is still only 30.
On the plus side, I get more from my scavenges ;) [17K XP, 28K Supplies]
