A Guild War Without Playing SPY All The Time

When it comes to GW one team reigns above all else… SPY!
Why?: There’s no map preview and SPY is the most consistent team to jump into a map without preview.
Most games have a way to stop players from playing the same OP teams/characters every game. In League of Legends, for exemple, both teams take turn banning a champion, up to 6 total. How can we stop players from playing SPY every game and make the game mode more interesting?
My Suggestion: Each island could have a Star Hero. Exemple, Island 20A (Eugene Star Hero), Island 20B (Shooter Rick), Island 20C (Beta) etc…
Completing a mission with the sector’s Star Hero would give extra VP and RP.
The Star Hero could be played in any position.
Both teams would have the same Star Heroes.
This would only work if you add map previews.
This would stop players from playing SPY all the time, keep GW feeling fresh with different Star Heroes every war, remove the repetitiveness of using the same team every day in all missions and add a level of challenge to GW.

Actually, if they were to do something like this, I think they have to buff/rebalance some heroes and introduce new types of walkers that counter ranged heroes. Having to play something / Princess / Yumiko all the time wouldn’t be any better.

Here’s an idea that might be better, each GW mission has a list of heroes like last stand’s expert mode. Complete a mission using heroes from that list and earn extra VP/RP.

I personally don’t see the problem with SPY, or for me, SMY. I understand people find it boring or repetitive but I love it, it makes me feel like a god being able to do island 20 without tools and gold. Why would you want to increase tool usage for no reason other than variation. It’s a great idea and new ideas are always welcome but if you don’t want to use SPY….. don’t! 🤷♂️

Don't have a problem with mixing things up to add spice but just need to be careful about getting too much into the pay to win territory. Players without these heroes unlocked or have them leveled high enough to be viable will not be able to compete in GW. Once that happen, the GW game mode will decline or players will leave. All you'll have left are players who pay or have been here for a long time. Then the death spiral begins.

I currently don’t have a problem playing SPY but I know that eventually I’ll find it repetitive and others will too. Do you see yourself still playing SPY in a year from now? And like you said, you feel like a god playing SPY, because it’s easy even at high levels. Personally, playing on easy mode all the time will eventually make GW feel like a chore.

I see your point and I might well get bored of it, however I only play GW to get the rewards so if I have to force myself to use SPY a couple of times a week to get the best new weapon out there and save tools for the ‘challenge’ then I will be very happy.

I definitely don't like the idea of requiring specific heroes, way to limiting to growing players and the above mentioned need to tools. Maybe a less drastic way is each section or map have one excluded class, this way everyone should be able to build a competitive team.

As for the topic at hand, I think the issue is not with how good SPY/SMY is but how far behind all other options are. I see the solution as trying to make other teams/builds viable instead of artificially limiting players' options. To me, saying you shouldn't use something that is considered good is like saying, we give up on trying to balance the game. Let's just avoid the problem and put in an artificial limit. The dev team has made progress but balance is still not there yet. I can see improvement with each update and I want to see where this goes before we implement something that has the potential to turn off a lot of players.
Personally, as a player, I would always welcome permissive features (i.e. you can also do this and use that) over restrictive features (i.e. you can't do this or use that). Just a design philosophy.

I am very much in favor of improving other heroes but honestly SMY/SPY is just way too OP. What's NG going to do to bring other teams up? Give Bruisers Mjölnir as a new weapon? On charge attacks lightning strikes and does 50% of current damage on all visible enemies and stuns/roots everything? I'm saying that as a joke, but that's basically what you can do with SMY.
SMY is broken, and something does need to be done about it, if you just like blasting through zombies then go run some scavenge missions. The game desperately needs new or improved walkers that counter SMY/SPY.
Armored Walkers, what a complete joke. Their ability is they increase the chance of body shot for ranged attacks. Laughs in Sasha. Make them immune to stuns from Ranged.
Metalheads, block ranged from attacking behind them. Oh no! I guess I'll have to use my Decimator to stun everything. Make them immune to all damage from ranged.
Fast Walkers, NG was right the first time. Retaliate is a direct counter to melee, can't prowl or punish. Just give them a chance to dodge ranged attacks, maybe a small chance for melee too. Honestly, it wasn't a problem once they made all charged attacks automatic hits, but then they changed it to bleed for some reason and everyone hated that, and now we have retaliating walkers that attack through walls.
New Walker types:
Radioactive Walkers, if you are within 3 spaces of a radioactive walker you can only get charge points from kills.
Make those skeletal sub-classes @ATLAS-Z came up with.
Crawlers, you have to be next to them to attack them.
Put these in missions and we'll have to use different strategies to overcome new challenges, like we should in a strategy game.

I was playing the last of us 2 last night and the part I was playing had some dogs trying to kill me. I was thinking, Dogs could also be a good addition to counter range heroes in NML. Have them move 3 spaces like fast walkers and give them a high % chance to dodge range attacks. Since they’re small and they move fast it’s hard to shoot them. They killed me like 10 times last night 🤣@ShadowWalker

SPY/SMY got me interested in the game again. I was a 2 Bruisers and Stabby Rick for years and love my SPY/SMY combo! Please dont change them! I would like other heros to offer as much in comparison but thats it.
